Mission Brief to flex her "Muscle" in Hambletonian

Manalapan, NJ --- Mission Brief, a daughter of Muscle Hill, was nurtured in the New Jersey Sire Stakes program and proved herself against the best of her age, gait and gender to win divisional honors at two.

When she trotted a mile in 1:50.3 at Lexington’s Red Mile on Oct. 2, 2014, she posted a record that made her not only the fastest 2-year-old filly but the fastest 2-year-old trotter of either gender.

Now she will tackle the best 3-year-old trotters in training in the $1.2 million Hambletonian on Saturday (Aug. 8) at the Meadowlands, bypassing an easier challenge in the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks for fillies.

Southwind Frank 1:53.4 NJSS Winner!!!

July 17

Gingras was back in the winner’s circle with Southwind Frank [$9.00] in the $100,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes for trotting colts and geldings, the seventh race.

The son of Muscle Hill, bred by Southwind Farms, trotted the mile in a stakes record 1:53.4, supplanting Hill I Am [Muscle Hill, who set the mark of 1:55.3 in 2013.

Southwind Frank controlled the tempo through fractions of 27.2, 56.4 and 1:26.2, covering the final quarter in 27.2 for a length and a half victory. Rallying for second was Bar Hopping [Muscle Hill] with Marion Marauder [Muscle Hill] third by a length and three-quarters.

“I wanted to cut the mile; I thought he was the horse to beat,” said Gingras. “I just wanted to have a clear path. My horse was a little bit shaky tonight, and I had to wait on him [to settle]. But I knew if I could keep him trotting, there was no one who would get near.”

Southwind Frank, trained by Ron Burke, won his opening leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes but broke stride last week. He has banked $60,000 with two wins in three starts for the partnership of Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, Our Horse Cents Stables and J&T Silva Stables. He was a $100,000 Lexington Selected Sale purchase.
Southwind Farms will sell the full sister to Southwind Frank - Southwind Fiat at the Harrisburg Sale this October.

Takter compares Canepa Hanover to Trixton

June 18, 2015

During the winter, trainer Jimmy Takter said 3-year-old trotter Canepa Hanover could be "a Trixton kind of horse." As summer approaches, Canepa Hanover is doing his best to prove Takter correct.

Canepa Hanover is the 2-5 morning line favorite in Saturday's $233,000 Goodtimes Stakes for 3-year-old trotters at Mohawk Racetrack. Last week, the colt won his Goodtimes elimination by 11 1/2 lengths over Iron in 1:51.3. The time equaled Trixton's track record set in last year's Goodtimes final.
But the similarities don't end there.

Super Freak

To confirm her status as a "freak," it would be easy to point to her world-record mile last October in Lexington. Two-year-old trotting fillies are not supposed to put up 1:50.3 miles, even on The Red Mile’s lightning clay. Yet, driver Yannick Gingras said the performance Mission Brief posted in the Breeders Crown on a frosty New Jersey evening late last November was equally impressive, if not more so. A better word for it might be scary.

Southwind Farms has announced that first-year stallion E L Titan 2,1:53.4 ($581,351) has a full and closed book for 2015.

The four-year-old son of Muscle Hill – Courtney Hall is standing his first season at stud at Overseas Farm in Campbellville, Ont., while in training for the 2015 racing season.

His first book has been limited to 60 mares and includes such standouts as Random Destiny 3,1:54.1 ($658,314), Early Secret 3,1:56.4 ($489,225), Canaco Runner 1:54.4 ($443,445), Christiana Hanover 3,1:53.4 ($279,266), Freeze Frame 1:53f ($293,815), Corinnas Mission 3,1:58 ($402,177), Angies Lucky Star 3,1:53.1 ($376,694), All Ready Hanover 3,1:53.4 and Fabulous Tag 1:59.2f – the dam of dual O'Brien Award winner Intimidate 4,1:51 ($1,224,008).

Syndicate Manager Mike Klau of Southwind stated that they were pleased with the response from Canadian breeders, as well as from breeders in the United States, calling it "a nice cross section of racemares and proven producers."

Breeding and Racing, E L Titan Will be Back in July - from Harness Racing Update

Joining Father Patrick as 4 year olds that will breed and race in 2015, E L Titan is gearing up for double duty. The stallion aspects of his career will be handled by Southwind Farms in New Jersey, but the horse will remain in Canada with trainer Riina Rekila and the foals will be Ontario breds. He is owned by Erkki Laakkonen of Finland. "The owner originally wanted to breed10 or 12 of their mares to him in Finland," Southwind's Mike Klau explained. "We were going to ship semen to Finland and they decided since they were going to do that they might as well breed him to mares in Canada as well. They contacted us about managing stallion career.

"We'll only breed a limited book, probably 50-60 mares. Riina is very careful with her horses and brings them along slowly. I doubt he'll be ready to race before July." Klau said one mare already lined up to be bred to E L Titan is Fabulous Tag, the dam of Intimidate. E L Titan (Muscle Hill) is 6 for 13 lifetime and beat Father Patrick in the Carl Erskine at Hoosier before finishing second behind him in the Breeders Crown. "I think he is a hell of a horse," Klau said. "He hasn't accomplished quite as much as we had hoped, but next year he's set up for a big year. He only had five starts at 2 and eight at 3. We originally thought they were going to take him to Europe to race in 2015. But they will race him here. He's a horse on the come."

E L Titan To Breed & Race

EL Titan 2,1:53.4 ($581,351) will serve a limited book of mares in 2015 and continue his racing career later in the season.

The multiple stakes-winning son of champion Muscle Hill will stand stud at Overseas Farm, Campbellville, Ontario, under the management of Southwind Farms, and then return to the track under the tutelage of trainer Riina Rekila.
